Netflix has green lighted another animated series "Carmen Sandiego." And "Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez will be voicing the character.
Best known for her roles in The CW series, Rodriguez is confirmed to voice the iconic character "Carmen Sandiego" which will premiere on Netflix in 2019. "Don't ask where... ask who' @Netflix (just call me Carmen)," the 32-year old actress playfully teased on Twitter, as reported by Entertainment Tonight.
The animated series is solely based on the iconic educational computer game franchise which follows Sandiego as she traverse across the world to steal national treasures. It will also offer a close look about the character's past and will also unveil who really is "Carmen Sandiego" and why she became a burglar.
Sandiego was also the main antagonist of several video games including "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" and was featured in various books, live-action game shows, an in another animated series called "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego," which ran for 40 episodes in 1994 and 1998.
It is said that Netflix has order 20 episodes for the series, with a 22-minute run per episode, as revealed by Variety. Additionally, "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard will be joining Rodriguez as he will be voicing Player, Sandiego's chief accomplice and friend.
"Carmen Sandiego" will be produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Emmy Award-winning Duane Capizzi will serve as co-executive producer and showrunner. Also on the team are CJ Kettler as executive producer and Caroline Fraser as the executive in char of production for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kevin Dart and Chromospher are assigned on the visual design, with DHX media serving as the animation studio.
Elsewhere, Rodriguez has been nominated thrice in the "Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy," which she won once in 2015. She is also best known in her role as Majo Tenorio in the musical drama film "Filly Brown," and as Beverly in the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."
