Chinese actor Wen Zhang's first project as a director has finally been wrapped up and is scheduled for a July 15 release.
The romantic comedy, with the title When Larry Met Mary, is Wen Zhang's directorial debut. It stars Zhu Yawen, Bao Bei'er and Song Jia. It will premiere just in time for domestic titles' most lucrative season, as foreign movies are hardly screened during the months of July and August.
When Larry Met Mary follows the story of a shy and timid man, who has secretly loved his classmate for a long time.
Aside from taking the role of director, Wen Zhang also served as a co-writer for the movie. According to him, his inspiration to do the rom-com came while he was working on the hit military TV series, Shao Shuai (Young Marshall).
Sharing his thoughts on the film's plot, he said, "I heard the story from a friend. It impressed me that a man could hold love in heart for so many years."
The actor recently received a nomination for best director award under the Asia New Talent category in the 2016 Shanghai International Film Festival. The film festival will be held from June 11 to June 14.
Wen Zhang last made headlines when he apologized to his wife Ma Yili for having an affair with his co-star in the TV drama Naked Marriage, Yao Di. After Wen Zhang and Yao Di were spotted by the paparazzi spending intimate moments together off-set, the actor came clean and wrote on Weibo, "I have brought this upon myself. A mistake is a mistake. This has nothing to do with anyone else."
His post broke a record, garnering 2.5 million comments and more than 1 million retweets. Many users argued over the cheating issue, especially since Ma Yili was pregnant with their second child when Wen Zhang's infidelity was exposed.
