The Warcraft-fever that is sweeping China continues as the film recently passed the $200 million mark after 12 days of its release in the region. The film is now a strong contender for the top-grossing imported film of 2016 in China.
During its seven-day spree which ended on Sunday, Warcraft earned a total of $48.7 million - pushing its total revenue to $206.7 million since its initial release on June 8.
Despite its slow reception in North America and other major markets, Warcraft's popularity in China contributed a significant amount of financial firepower, which helped propel the film's worldwide box office record to $377 million.
Warcraft is slowly inching towards the current record holder of the bestselling foreign film of the year, which is Disney's Zootopia. Chinese film statistics reveal that Zootopia earned a total of $235.4 million.
Zootopia producer Disney has had a wonderful year at Chinese cinemas. The company recently opened its Shanghai Disney theme park. Meanwhile, Pixar's latest film Finding Dory debuted at the number two spot earning $18.2 million in its first three days of release.
X-Men: Apocalypse snatched the third spot earning $15.7 million pushing its total revenue in China to $110.4 million since its release on June 3.
At the fourth spot on the top five box office hits is Alice Through the Looking Glass, also from Disney, which amassed $58.7 million in China alone. In comparison, the film earned $69 million in the United States and Canada, opening up the vital argument of China's importance to the global box office success of recently produced films.
A local production, Warrior Vs. Dragon, from Enlight Pictures, earned $1.5 million throughout the week.
