Lionsgate Entertainment is in early negotiations to turn "Divergent Series: Ascendant," the fourth installment of the "Divergent" series, into a television series. It is therefore confirmed that the fourth installment will not be hitting the big screen anymore. Their initial plan is to make it a backdoor pilot for a potential series spin-off. Shailene Woodley and Theo James, however, will not be part of the intended spin-off.

Lionsgate plans to create a final storyline in "Divergent Series: Ascendant" that involves the current cast, including of course the lead stars Woodley and James. They would also introduce the new cast in the movie intended to continue the story either in television or through a streaming service.

According to The Variety, turning the supposed film into a TV series could be a better option after the third installment, "Divergent Series: Allegiant," fell on its ratings last spring. "Divergent Series: Ascendant" was slated for release on June 2017 as the company thought it would have been a good contender for the reboot of "The Mummy" and "World War Z 2."

The results of "Allegiant's" poor ratings during its release was a sign of defeat for Lionsgate. Rotten Tomatoes reported that the franchise kept experiencing a drop in their ratings for every succeeding "Divergent" film released. Lionsgate did not want to comment on the matter, and also provided minimal details with regards to turning "Divergent Series: Ascendant" into a television series. The same source stated that though there are is no official announcement, it seems that it will likely air on Starz since the network was recently acquired by Lionsgate.
