Dallas Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban is reportedly happy with his squad's recent acquisition of combo guard Seth Curry, the younger brother of two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.
Reports went out at the end of the recent season that the 25-year-old former Duke standout is planning to decline his $1 million player option with the Sacramento Kings as he wants to test the market as a restricted free agent this summer.
On June 27, four days before he is set to become a free agent, the Kings gave him a qualifying offer that he could accept if he wants to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. However, Sacramento withdrew the qualifying offer three days into the free-agency period, which made Curry an unrestricted free agent.
Twelve days later, on July 15, the 2013 undrafted player was signed by the Mavs to a two-year, $5.9 million deal.
It was said to be a satisfying deal for Cuban especially after the team lost veteran backup point guard Raymond Felton to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, according to the Mavs' official website.
The 57-year-old businessman and investor believes that after his strong showing during the latter stages of last season with the Kings, Curry could unleash his full potential for the Mavs next season.
"He can get buckets and he can shoot," said Cuban. "You know, he's been in some dysfunctional situations, and I think he'll be able to thrive with us. He can get his shot off, and he can do a lot more."
Curry had a breakthrough season in 2015-2016, his fourth in the NBA, as he was able to play 44 games and started nine of them for former Kings head coach George Karl. He averaged 6.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists playing 15.7 minutes per game and shooting almost 50 percent from the field.
It was a stark contrast from his previous three years in the league when he only appeared in a total of four games combined for the Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns.
Meanwhile, SB Nation indicated that the younger Curry is "A breath of fresh air" for Dallas as he has a lot of untapped talent in him and has a tremendous upside.
The report noted that it was a good decision in the part of the Mavericks to secure Curry and let go of the aging Felton as he can become like "J.J. Barea but taller" sooner or later.
