A significant number of Microsoft Surface Pro 3 owners have been complaining about the unusually weak battery life of the device. The issue first surfaced in May and affected devices were reportedly running only for about one or two hours after a full charge. Recently, Microsoft said that it has found the problem of this unusual battery drain and has vowed to fix the issue.
One of the initial reaction regarding the problem was that it was caused by faulty battery packs. Many users complaining about the issue revealed that they are using devices that have a Simplo branded battery. While faulty battery problems are common laptop and other devices, Microsoft said that the cause of the problem is not the hardware.
In a statement acquired by The Digital Lifestyle, a Microsoft representative said, "Based on our investigations we can confirm that it is not an issue with the battery cells. We believe this is something that can be addressed via software."
Although Microsoft did admit that the problem can be fixed by a software patch, the company did not specifically set a date as to when it plans to roll out the fix. Microsoft's next Patch Tuesday is scheduled on Aug. 9 and many Surface Pro 3 users are expecting that the tech giant will finally address the battery problem, according to PC World.
On the other hand, some tech experts believe that Microsoft might roll out the fix earlier than its monthly Patch Tuesday due to the severity of the problem. There are also rumors claiming that Microsoft might release the update during the company's Anniversary Updates scheduled next Tuesday.
This is not the first time Surface devices were plagued by battery problems. In 2015, the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book were also reported to have ignored the lower-power mode when not in use, which in return drains the batteries faster than usual.
