Manchester United's flop midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could be set for a return trip to Germany with former club Bayern Munich after recently being demoted to the reserve team by Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho.

SkySports indicated that the retired Germany international, who turned 32 on Monday, "has been told there could be a place for him back at Bayern Munich" if he decides to exit United this summer as Mourinho is currently working at a major cleansing at the Old Trafford.

Reports went out that during the German midfielder's birthday, Mourinho ordered Schweinsteiger's first-team dressing room cleared out and moved to the reserves' lockers as he is not considered as a part of the Special One's midfielder options next season.

The 53-year-old Portuguese mentor has reportedly chosen Ander Herrera, Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick, and Marouane Fellaini to play as the spine of his midfield. And with the impending world-record transfer of Paul Pogba, the 6-foot Kolbermoor, West Germany native really has no chance of bursting into the Red Devils' first team anytime soon.

Schweinsteiger was signed by United last summer in a £6.5 million deal with the Bundesliga champions. He had played in only 18 games in the Premier League last term under ex-manager Louis van Gaal and had scored only once during the said period.

Van Gaal greatly utilized him during the first few weeks of the 2015-2016 season, but eventually he lost his spot because of recurring injuries.

Now with Mourinho at the helm, he was dropped further down the pecking order of United's midfield.

"Should he speak at some point about a desire to return, then we will discuss it with him," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told reporters during a recent interview.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail Online reported that Schweinsteiger's older brother Tobi had accused Mourinho of "lack of respect" for his younger sibling after the locker clearing up incident on Monday.

The current Bayern Munich Under 17 team assistant manager posted in his social media account the words "no respect" in the said day, which many believed was a hit to the assertive United head coach.

There are still no official reports whether Schweinsteiger had already reached out to the Bavarians, but considering his current role as a trainer of the Old Trafford's reserve squad, it seems like the call will be made sooner or later.
