Actress-singer Jennifer Lopez bagged the role of Griselda Blanco, also known as the "Cocaine Godmother," for an upcoming HBO TV film. Lopez will also serve as the executive producer of the film.
Lopez said that she is looking forward to bringing Griselda's story to the small screens.
"I've been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years. "The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda's story to life." she told The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will cover Blanco's life story, her rise to power and her ultimate downfall. The infamous Columbian drug kingpin was known as the one who pioneered drug trafficking from Columbia to the U.S. by stealthily using custom bras and girdles to hid cocaine. At the height of her operation, Blanco reportedly trafficked more than 300 kilos of cocaine per month in her rise as a lady drug kingpin.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Blanco ruled the bloody drug trade in Miami and ran one of the most powerful drug cartels in the era. She has since been convicted of three murders and drug trafficking thereafter spent almost two decades in the U.S. prison before getting deported to Columbia in 2004, The Rolling Stone reported.
Blanco's life story has been the subject of documentary feature called "Cocaine Cowboys" and has inspired USA Network's drug kingpin drama "Queen of the South."
The film will be HBO's latest star-driven TV movie venture after "Confirmation" which is based on the real-life sexual harassment case filed by Anita Hill against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas starring Kerry Washington and Bryan Cranston.
