"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn and lead cast Chris Pratt talked about Peter Quill's father, Ego The Living Planet.

Ego, is a sentient planet that can manifest in human form. The character will be played by veteran actor Kurt Russell for the upcoming film.

In an interview, Gunn revealed that Pratt suggested casting Russell for the role.

"He was actually not in my head initially, but one day Chris suggested him, and I would have been really disappointed if he'd said no. Hey, if you have to cast anything, Kurt's a pretty good way to go," he told Empire.

In "Guardians of the Galaxy," there were multiple implications about the identity of Quill's father. For starters, it was revealed that Yondu (Michael Rooker) is annoyed by him. Second, that he actually wanted to see Quill but Yondu decided to raise the child as Star-Lord instead.

Since development about "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" began, Gunn has maintained that the sequel will be a story about fathers, Vulture reported. As part of that story development, having Star-Lord meet his father for the first time would be akin to the audience meeting a new character because MCU's version is Ego The Living Planet is very much different than the celestial being known in the comic books.

As for their meeting, Pratt said that Star-Lord have expectations about his father, so it will be interesting to see how they will interact once they meet.

"You're going to see these characters having to endure the realities of being in a family. You're talking about a guy who's been longing to know who his father is for a long time. He'll discover if that person lives up to the expectations he has in his head," Pratt said.
