"Outlander" has added two key players in Season 3. The Starz series cast Wil Johnson ("Waking the Dead") and John Bell ("The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies") to play characters based on Diana Gabaldon's third book, "Voyager."
According to TV Line, Johnson has been tapped to play Joe Abernathy, a fellow doctor of Claire during the 20th century in Boston and who will become one of her trusted friends. As per the cable network's official character description, Abernathy is described as an intelligent, charismatic person with a wry and irreverent sense of humor. In "Outlander" Season 3, viewers will find him establishing a great friendship with Caitriona Balfe's character as they both feel out of place in the mostly all-white, all male medical field.
In addition to Johnson, producers also have cast John Bell to portray the role of Young Ian in "Outlander" Season 3. According to Deadline, Ian is a tall, gangly Scottish lad with a heart of gold who's more like his fierce uncle, Jamie Fraser. When viewers first meet him, he is still a very gawky boy; but he will keep on proving that he is a man and will grow into a formidable character as the series moves forward.
The duo joins previously cast David Berry (A Place to Call Home) as Lord John Grey who will turn up in "Outlander" Season 3 as a governor of a desolate prison in Northern Scotland. Previously reported as a closeted gay man, he will be a pivotal figure in Jamie's storyline in the new installment.
"Outlander" Season 3 premieres sometime in 2017.
