"Captain America: Civil War" actor Anthony Mackie, "The Leftovers" actress Margaret Qualley, and "Wonder Woman" actor Danny Huston are set to star in the sci-fi drama film "IO." "House of Time" director Jonathan Helpert will be helming it.

Mackie will play a complicated and mysterious refugee Micha in "IO," Variety reported. Qualley will play the teenager Sam Walden. Huston's role Henry remains a mystery at this point.

"IO" is based on a story of one girl's coming-of-age while examining the dangers of humanity's current relationship with the planet. Walden is surviving as one of the last people on an abandoned post-cataclysmic Earth.

In the plot of "IO," Walden is racing to find a cure for her poised home world before the last shuttle off the planet to the distant human space colony leaves her stranded. Micah is on his way to the imminent shuttle launch and makes Walden question whether she can really alter the Earth's fate.

According to Deadline, "IO" is from an original script by Clay Jeter, Charles Spano, and Will Basanta. It was developed at the Sundance Institute's Writers Lab and the Sundance Institute Catalyst Forum. The executive producers include Basanta, Jeter, Spano, Victor Shapiro, Raphael Swann, Alain Peyrollaz, Francois Enginger, Mackie, Jason Spire, Ryan Lough, Dave Hansen, and Johnny Mac.

"IO" will be produced by Mandalay Pictures' Jason Michael Berman and Untitled Entertainment's Laura Rister in association with Great Point Media and Okanagan Media Limited, Sunset Junction Entertainment, Good Lap Productions, Make It With Gravy Productions, and Inspire Entertainment.

Mackie was most recently seen as Falcon in "Captain America: Civil War" and as Martin Luther King in "All the Way." He recently wrapped production on Kathryn Bigelow's untitled pic revolving around the 1967 Detroit riots.

Qualley was last seen in Warner Bros.' "The Nice Guys" and has the final season of "The Leftovers" bowing next year on HBO. She also recently appeared in the Spike Jonze-directed Kenzo commercial.

Huston made appearances in "All I See Is You" and the TV mini-series "Paranoid." He is expected to join next year's "Wonder Woman" with Gal Gadot and "The Last Photograph" as Tom Hammond.

The "IO" film starts production this week in France. It will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017.
