"Star Trek Beyond" star Chris Pine is in talks to join the cast of Disney's adaptation of "A Wrinkle in Time." "Selma" director Ava DuVernay is being helmed on it.
Pine will play Dr. Alex Murray in "A Wrinkle In Time," Deadline reported. He is the husband to Dr. Kate Murray ("Beauty and the Beast" actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw). Kate is the microbiologist and mother to the main character Meg Murray ("Santa's Boot Camp" newcomer Storm Reid).
"A Wrinkle In Time" involves a young girl Meg whose government scientist father Alex has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract. Alex's project involves being transported to a fifth dimension with the mysterious inhabited planets. Meg is the oldest daughter among the children and takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way.
According to Variety, "A Wrinkle In Time" is the first book in Madeleine L'Engle's "Time Quintet" series, which includes "A Wind in the Door," "Many Waters," "A Swiftly Tilting Planet," and "An Acceptable Time." Its big screen adaptation is penned by "Frozen" co-director Jennifer Lee for Disney.
"A Wrinkle In Time" was the first tentpole to receive tax credits under the California Film Commission's expanded tax incentives program. It received $18.1 million from the state of California back in August. It is one of the major thrusts of the expansion of the Golden State incentive program to bring back big-budgeted movies to Hollywood from states such as Louisiana, Georgia, and various Canadian provinces.
Pin also joins "Greenleaf" veteran actress Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Which), "Hot Pursuit" star Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit), and "The Mindy Project" actress Mindy Kaling (Mrs. Who) in "A Wrinkle In Time." He is repped by CAA and John Carrabino Management.
Pine recently appeared in "Star Trek Beyond" and CBS Films' "Hell or High Water" that earned him best reviews. He will be next seen as Steve Trevor in Warner Bros. "Wonder Woman." He is also expected to reprise his role of Captain Kirk in the fourth installment of the "Star Trek" franchise.
Pine is expected to get in front of the camera for DuVernay's "A Wrinkle In Time" before the end of the year, with filming in Los Angeles.
