The Atlanta Hawks could reportedly target Indiana Pacers shooting guard Monta Ellis before the trade deadline as the team is looking to improve the weakness they currently have in their wing positions.
After starting the season with a 9-2 record and briefly leading the Eastern Conference, the Hawks have lost 10 of their last 11 games to drop to the 10th spot in the East standings.
Fansided indicated that one of the main problems Atlanta has right now is its evident weakness in the wing positions. The report noted that "no Hawks perimeter player can consistently create their own offense, which is why the team struggles so consistently during clutch situations".
Atlanta head coach Mike Budenholzer currently has a starting lineup composed of Dwight Howard, Paul Millsap, Kent Bazemore, Kyle Korver, and Dennis Schroder. However, during crunch time, the team has relied on bench player Tim Hardaway Jr. to "create in isolation".
Hardaway Jr. definitely has the potential to become a great isolation player, but Budenholzer wants to contend in the East right now.
Statistics show that there are no other players in the Hawks lineup that average more than 2.7 drives per game except Schroder, according to the report.
Even though Ellis is already on the other side of 30, he is still one of the best players in the league to "attack off the dribble and finish at the rim", which is what is lacking in Atlanta and one of the reasons they had been losing close games.
According to Bleacher Report, the Pacers are "open" to trade Ellis with the plan of getting their roster younger. Ellis is the oldest star in Indiana's roster right now with Paul George, Jeff Teague, and Myles Turner leading the squad.
This could be the opportunity the Hawks are looking for to acquire an experienced and dependable wing player that can provide them clutch shots when they need them.
Ellis may not necessarily be a starter in Atlanta, but being the sixth man off the bench will not be bad for the 11-year veteran.
