Four years after playing Kang Ma-ru in the KBS2 drama series "The Innocent Man," Song Joong-ki is back on the small screen. He is set to star in another KBS2 drama series titled "Descendants of the Sun" opposite Song Hye-kyo.
Set to premiere on Feb. 24 on KBS, "Descendants of the Sun" features Joong-ki as a soldier and a United Nations peacekeeper named Yoo Shi-jin and Hye-kyo as a doctor named Kang Mo Yeon. The love story of the two characters is set in conflict areas in Uruk, a fictional country in Central Asia.
With an investment of 12 billion South Korean won ($10 million) and the collaborative effort of Chinese and Korean production teams, the upcoming KBS2 drama series ended its production in December 2015, Yonhap News has learned. The last shoot was reportedly wrapped up in the early morning of Dec. 30, 2015
Joong-ki and Hye-kyo filmed their first "Descendants of the Sun" scene in Seoul, South Korea, on June 12, 2015. Other scenes were shot in Greece, particularly in Arachova, Lemnos and Zakynthos, Han Cinema reported.
It was in 2012 when Joong-ki last starred in a South Korean drama series when he played the lead role in "The Innocent Man" opposite Park Si-yeon and Moon Chae-won. Prior to this, he starred in "Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung," "Love Racing," "My Precious You," "Triple," "My Fair Lady," "Will it Snow for Christmas?," "Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors," "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" and "Deep Rooted Tree."
In 2010, Joong-ki joined the cast of "Running Man." This was almost two years after he made his debut as an actor on the big screen when he played No-tak in "A Frozen Flower."
Aside from "Descendants of the Sun," Joong-ki is also set to star in the upcoming film "Battleship Island" opposite So Ji-sub and Hwang Jung-min. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, the film is set to be released in 2017 and it is said to be about the untold story of 400 Koreans who tried to flee after being coercively drafted during the Japanese occupation in Korea.
