Another TV series is now safe from this year's cancellation block. "Superstore," the comedy starring America Ferrera, has been officially renewed for Season 3.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has given a 22-episode order of "Superstore" Season 3 on Tuesday. The move will put the comedy series among the shows joining the network's 2017-2018 TV season. The new installment's premiere date and additional cast information are expected to be announced on a later date.
"We are extremely proud of Superstore, which is one of the smartest and funniest comedies on television today," NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said in a statement.
"Through the show's expertly drawn characters, our producers and cast do a remarkable job touching on many issues in which audiences can relate. To its credit, not only does Superstore make us laugh, but it makes us think as well."
"Superstore" centers around Amy (Ferrera), the store's most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together. Jonah (Ben Feldman), who is often the target of his colleagues ribbing, is joined on the floor with his fellow associates, including sardonic Garrett (Colton Dunn), the ambitious Mateo (Nico Santos) and sweet teenager and new mom Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom). Overseeing the store is Glenn (Mark McKinney), the affable, clueless store manager, and Dina (Lauren Ash), the aggressive assistant manager who enforces Cloud 9 policy with an iron fist. From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans, to the clueless seasonal hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.
NBC's decision to renew "Superstore" comes from the show's solid performance in ratings on its 8PM block every Thursday nights. So far, the show's live broadcast is averaging a 1.8 in rating among adults 18-49 with a total of 5.7 million viewers per episode. Deadline reported that the show is also well-received by critics.
"Superstore" joins other recently renewed NBC shows including "This Is Us" and "The Good Place."
An all new episode of Superstore titled "Super Hot Store" will air on Thursday, Feb. 16 on NBC.
