"The Purge" is one of the most popular horror series in recent memory because of its unique premise. Because of its popularity, the movie spawned sequels and there's no indication it's stopping anytime soon.
Confirmed Follow-up to the Movie Series
Fans of the horror movie series "The Purge" should expect something new to drop next year. According to Uproxx, the yet untitled movie is already slated for release on July 4, 2018. Although it is expected that the movie will have some sort of continuation after "The Purge: Election Year" a new film without a confirmed title is a bold move for the producers and studio.
Although there's no news on the possible plot of the upcoming film, the fact that it's going to be released on Independence Day could mean one thing: it's another horror film tied to political statements and reality. Their previous movie is a strong political commentary laced with extreme violence and the next film could be another commentary given the current political climate in the country.
Prequel or Sequel?
While "The Purge: Election Year" could do some follow-up considering what happened after the election, it's possible that the next film is not necessarily a sequel. According to JoBlo, the movie series' writer and director James DeMonaco indicated that he's interested in creating a prequel. Since the movie already reached its trilogy status, a prequel or the story on how everything started could be a good story.
Continuing the movie series is more than just a move to continue the storyline of "The Purge" - it's also big money maker to the production company. The first film cashed in $89 million in box office against $3 million budget and the follow-up movies also had the same earning range with box office earnings nearly ten times the production cost.
