'Descendants of the Sun' Wins TV Grand Prize at Baeksang Arts Awards

(Photo : YouTube Screenshot) 'Descendants of the Sun' series and the Song-Song couple bagged top prize and several awards at the Baeksang Arts Award on Friday, June 3.

Mega-hit Korean series Descendants of the Sun bagged the top prize in the television category during the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards on Friday, June 3, at the Kyung Hee Univesity's Grand Peace Hall in Seoul.

Aside from that, its stars - the Song-Song couple - also took home popularity awards. Song Joong Ki won the Male Popularity Award, while Song Hye Gyo the Female Popularity Award. Both were also awarded the iQiyi Global Star Award.

Korean heartthrob Song Joong Ki was also nominated for Best Actor award for his role as a special forces captain in Descendants of the Sun. However, the trophy was awarded to Yoo Ah In, who played a role in the SBS drama Six Flying Dragons.

Meanwhile, the Best TV Drama award was given to Signal, a time-bending police film. Its star Kim Hye Soon also took home the Best Actress award, according to Soompi.

Inspired by MBC's Three Families Under One Roof, the third installment of tvN's Reply series Reply 1988 won the Best Director for Shin Won Ho and Best New Actor for Ryu Joon Yeol.

Meanwhile, webtoon-based TV series Chees in the Trap star Kim Go Eun won the Best New Actress award.

In the Best Entertainment Programme category, MBC's King of Masked Singers was proclaimed the victor.

On the other hand, in the film categories, renowned director Lee Joon Ik - for the movies Dongju: Portrait of a Poet and The Throne - successfully snatched the grand prize.
