HBO's "Game of Thrones" has been a force in the recent Emmys with the distinction of now being the most awarded scripted series. However, Season 7 may skip the Emmy ballot next year.
The blockbuster fantasy drama now has 38 wins in total including the award for Outstanding Drama Series for second year in a row. The record previously belonged to "Frazier" with 37 overall wins.
"Game of Thrones" came away with 12 wins out of 24 nominations on Sunday, The Guardian reported. Twelve is the second most victories nabbed in a single ceremony after "John Adams" mini-series. However, the series may not have the opportunity to break this record next year if Season 7 will be pushed back to summer of 2017, Deadline reported.
The episode titled "Battle of the Bastards" won awards for best drama writing and directing for David Benihoff and DB Weiss respectively.
After receiving the award, Weiss said in the backstage, "We love Frasier. They had a long run. We're sure that somebody will come and take this from us," then jokingly added, "We just hope that it does not happen until we're all dead."
The ensemble fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" has been an awards favorite over the years. Over six seasons, "GoT" has amassed a total of 106 Emmy nominations including trophies for Peter Dinklage in the Best Supporting Actor category.
"Game of Thrones" Season 7 is currently in production. The next season will be cut short for 7 episodes as a prequel to the final season.
