"Penny Dreadful" is not coming back according to Showtime CEO David Nevins. Writer John Logan explained why.
At the Television Critics Association press tour, Nevins revealed that the surprise ending was intended by Logan. He went to say that he tried to convince Logan to go beyond the intended ending, Digital Spy reported.
"I think [Logan] always envisioned a three-season arc for her and that character," Nevins said the added, "I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond, but as we were going into that final season, it became clear that the combination of that character and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going."
He went to say that the shocking death of Vanessa Ives had always been the plan all along and to go beyond that would cost "Penny Dreadful" its authenticity. In an interview, Logan said that the show had always been about Ives' struggle with faith and a fitting conclusion to end that struggle is at the moment of her death, TV Line reported.
Fans of "Penny Dreadful" were left baffled when the closing moments of the series in Season 3 ended with a "The End" tag line. However, fans of the series have kept their hopes up with rumors that a new writer will take the reins to revive the series.
"Penny Dreadful" is a British-American psychological thriller that reimagines classic literary characters in the Victorian London.
