Open Road Pictures has just acquired the right for the new crime thriller drama, "Labyrinth," and Johnny Depp is on board to play the protagonist of the story. Miramax is set to co-fund for the U.S distribution while Good Universe will deal with the international sales.
Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer") is going to direct the project and the production is slated to start around November. With Furman being known for getting outstanding acting performances, Depp is in good hands and will hopefully return with a good reputation.
According to Slashfilm, the film is going to be introduced in the Toronto Film Festival. With Depp attached to the project, it wouldn't be difficult to market it to the audience. Depp has been under the radar in terms of acting projects for a while, and this film is expected to bring him back in his acting career, considering almost all of his recent films were flops at the box office.
Depp's character, Russell Poole, is a disgraced LAPD detective finding redemption by digging deeper into his biggest case, as he tries to unravel all the controversial and corrupt system of the department back in the late 1990s, Screen Daily reported. A reporter, Jackson, teams up with in Poole to the search for the truth. Two decades later, the case still remains open.The real life Poole however, already passed away in 2015 due to a heart attack.
Miriam Segal will be the producer for the film and Christian Contreras is going to write the script based on a 2003 book, 'LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implications of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal.'
