"Glee" alum Jane Lynch will reprise her role as Reid's schizophrenic mother on "Criminal Minds" Season 12.
According to TV Guide, Diana's return on the long-running crime procedural is linked to a Reid-centric storyline. She is booked to appear in at least two episodes beginning in Season 12's eleventh episode, slated to air in early 2017.
"We're really excited. It's a fun Reid story and she's really excited to come back and reprise her role," executive producer Erica Messer said.
"She's been a busy lady and we're still here, so we're happy to be able to offer that opportunity for her to come back."
Viewers of "Criminal Minds" first met Diana Reid in the finale of Season 1. She resurfaced again in November 2008 in back-to-back episodes when the BAU was sent to Las Vegas where she lives. Details about Reid's heavy storyline are still being kept under wraps.
Previously, Criminal Minds has gone through a major cast shakeup. Thomas Gibson, who plays Agent Hotch, has been fired from the show due to his violent behavior on set. On the heels of his firing, the producers have decided to bring back Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss) as a full-fledged series regular to fill-in for Gibson's void.
As for the premiere, "Criminal Minds" Season 12 will open with the BAU welcoming a new agent named Luke Alvez. According to the official plot synopsis, the first hour will find the team tracking down a killer who escaped prison with other inmates at the end of Season 11.
"Criminal Minds" Season 12 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 9Pm on CBS.
