"Shokugeki no Soma" recently concluded their season 2 run with Soma accepting different challenges from research societies. Although season 3 is yet to be confirmed or announced, the upcoming season presents bigger challenges for the main character and Polar Storm Dormitory.
The second season of "Shokugeki no Soma" only ran for 13 episodes according to My Anime List. The recently concluded episodes tackled two story arcs: the Autumn Elections Arc and Stagiaire Arc.
The Autumn Elections Arc is a single elimination cooking match during the playoffs. Soma reached the finals and competed with Hayama and Ryo. Unfortunately, Soma lost as Hayama was declared the winner.
After the cooking competition, the students were sent to immerse themselves in the food industry. Soma passed the challenges of the two restaurants he worked for and learned French cooking technique along the way.
The upcoming season will most likely deal with two story arcs and these are the turning point on the anime as it features a drastic change in Tootski Academy: Senzaemon Nakiri was replaced by Azami Nakiri after a vote by the Elite Ten. With Azami as headmaster, the second story arc focuses on the creation of Central Division with the rest of research society being shut down.
Soma will have a bigger role in season 3 because he will be a playing a key role in keeping their polar star dormitory intact and even help save some research society. A shift in alliance will also happen as Azami's daughter, Erina, transfers to polar star dorm because of her father's decision to create Central Division.
According to when-release, it is expected that "Shokugeki no Soma" will return in 2017 although there is no confirmation from the production network. But because of the anime and manga's popularity, the third season for Soma and the gang is highly expected.
The third season for "Shokugeki no Soma" is still in development and no formal announcement is made about the series. However, a 2017 return is most likely and Yukihira Soma is in for greater challenges as he faces bigger food wars not only from different research societies but even from Elite Ten students.
