Matt Smith said that he wants to follow the footsteps of his other "Doctor Who" cast members in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also said that he regrets not doing a full series with Jenna Coleman.

In an interview at the New York Comic Convention, Smith was asked whether he would like to join Marvel like David Tennant in "Jessica Jones" and Karen Gillan in "Guardians of the Galaxy." He answered in the affirmative hinting that he is simply waiting to be asked by Marvel, Bustle reported.

"My answer is... when will they ask me?," he said.

At the NYCC, Smith and Coleman alongside Alex Kingston reunited at the Tardis reunion panel where Smith revealed that he regretted not having a full run with Coleman. When Smith was accused of leaving too soon by a fan, Kingston jumped to his defense and said that any actor who plays the role needs a break after all the filming and press commitments associated with the show, Radio Times reported.

Smith left "Doctor Who" in 2014 allowing Peter Cipaldi to take over as the twelfth incarnation of the time-travelling Time Lord. Recently, reports of Smith's return surfaced in the event that Cipaldi leaves the show. However, BBC reportedly asked Cipaldi to stay on for another year after Season 10.

"Doctor Who" fans likewise opined that Smith may be due to appear again if the series will have multi-Doctor episodes. Showrunner Steven Moffat teased in earlier reports that Smith could be the first of the twelve doctors to have the ability to regenerate.
