"Vikings" is currently on its season four run but the popular series about the explorers during the Dark Ages is set to come back next year. History Channel recently announced the series has been renewed for season five.
History Channel's popular series "Vikings" is coming back in 2017. According to Deadline, History Channel renewed the series for one more season even though the series is yet to finish its season four run.
For the unfamiliar, "Vikings" is an original series of History Channel. It tells the story of adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok who rose to prominence during the Dark Ages. The series is based on the historical character of the same name, as Ragnar started out as a simple farmer who eventually became a king.
The first season of "Vikings" was aired in 2013 with only nine episodes. However, it slowly rose to popularity and more seasons were ordered. The second and third season ran for 10 episodes each while the fourth ran for 20 episodes.
Although season four ran for 20 episodes, History Channel chose to divide the series into two. The first ten episodes were aired from February to April 2016. The premiere of the remaining episodes is set on November.
The current and the upcoming season should be a game changer for the series and History Channel in general. According to Deadline, the main character of the series will end his run in the show. King Ragnar, played by Travis Fimmel, will die.
But even though Fimmel is departing the show because of his character's death, the series is set to return with another character. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is set to be part of the cast in the upcoming season although news about his possible character in the series is still a secret. Meyers is known for his role in the TV series "The Tudors" as well as the upcoming series of History Channel titled, "Roots."
History Channel's series renewal announcement is no surprise given the popularity of the series. Even though Fimmel is possibly departing a brand new character set to make waves in the series is coming in.
