Mehcad Brooks is joining in on the action in "Supergirl" season 2 as DC Comics superhero Guardian. In the new photos released by The CW, Brooks, who portrays James Olsen on the show, gets a shiny, major upgrade to his look.

James is no longer sitting on the sideline as he watches his girl Kara Danvers take on the bad guys as Supergirl.  He's going to try his hand at crime fighting as the shield-wielding superhero.

"James is going to decide that he can no longer be a sidekick, so he's going to become a vigilante," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told TVLine about the developments in Joel's storyline this season.

Kreisberg added that as James takes on the role of Guardian, it's going to cause massive tension in his relationship with Kara because he decides to keep his vigilante activities from her.

"There's this new masked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes. ... And he's recruited Winn to help him. Winn is his man in the van. Winn and James together is like comedy gold," Kreisberg teased.

To fans who are still reeling from the premiere episode where Kara ended his relationship with James, Kreisberg explained that the writers wanted to present a more relatable story where a friendship means so much more.

"We realized the best scenes between them were the nice, sweet scenes where they were being friends," he explained to TVLine.

Tyler Hoechlin's Superman also made his debut in the first episode of "Supergirl" season 2.

"Supergirl" officially took off on its new home, The CW, and starting it second season with 3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. It is The CW's most-watched show in the 8 p.m. Monday time slot in nearly eight years and the best rating in six years.
