Critics and the public are shaking their heads in disapproval of a promotional video of the upcoming 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
According to Allkpop, the promotional video titled "ARARI, YO" was created by the Korean government for the international multi-sport event. It was uploaded last month and considering its YouTube figures, it is likely that most of the viewers are not happy with the PyeongChang MV.
As of date of writing, the PyeongChang MV has been viewed over 1 million times and garnered almost 36,000 dislikes over 1,000 likes. Critics and the public claimed the promotional video is like an imitation of Psy's hit track "Gangnam Track."
"It feels like a B-rated video, trying to copy Psy's "Gangnam Style" but without any humor and a confusing storyline," an expert said of the PyeongChang MV.
Meanwhile, creators of the promotional video shared their piece on the issue and said, "The video is aimed at international viewers and is meant to be a part of a viral marketing; many foreigners have clicked thumbs up."
PyeongChang MV featured SISTAR's Hyorin alongside Korean celebrities and comedians. Some commenters linked "ARARI, YO" to Japan's promotional video for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which was shown during the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics.
Amid criticisms, the Culture Ministry denied "ARARI, YO" as the official promotional video of the upcoming 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Korea Herald reported. "People have misunderstood the clip's purpose. It's not the official trailer," a ministry official announced.
"The official video for the PyeongChang Olympics, which reflects the event's vision and theme, will be released next week," the ministry supported. Further reports revealed the Culture Ministry spent over 240,000 US dollars for the making of "ARARI, YO" MV.
