"Transformers: Age of Extinction" actor Mark Wahlberg stars in a drama based on Boston Marathon bombing "Patriots Day." His life seems to change in an instant shown in the new teaser trailer.
According to Variety, Wahlberg plays the role of Boston Police Department Sergeant Tommy Saunders. He joined survivors, first responders, and investigators in an effort to track down the perpetrators before they can strike again. Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis will be played by "The Gambler" actor John Goodman.
"Patriots Day" follows the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack leaving three people dead and 264 injured on the streets of the Massachusetts capital, Entertainment Weekly reported. Meanwhile, it has debuted online offering a glimpse of their latest reality-rooted project. It focuses on the events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The teaser of "Patriots Day" hints a footage of the bombing as the camera shakes and goes black. It detailed the initial attack and subsequent city-wide manhunt for the Tsarnaev brothers, played by "Coming Through the Rye" actor Alex Wolff and "Beautiful Something" actor Themo Melikidze. It also played the haunting, piano-driven rendition of "America the Beautiful" reverently and ominously.
In addition to "Patriots Day" trailer, Saunders kisses his nurse wife Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) goodbye as he heads toward the marathon. He is completely unaware of the tragedy that will ensue.
"Patriots Day" will be directed by "Battleship" producer Peter Berg. Together with Berg, the writers are "Triple 9" writer Matt Cook and Oscar nominees Matt Charman, Eric Johnson, and Paul Tamasy. They are weaving together the intersecting stories of Mrs. Saunders, Police Commissioners Saunders and Davis, Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons).
"Patriots Day" will be produced under the CBS Films and Lionsgate. It is the third collaboration of Wahlberg and Berg. The duo has already collaborated on several action dramas based on true, traumatic events. Their previous works together include 2013's "Lone Survivor" and "Deepwater Horizon" showing currently in theaters.
"Patriots Day" opens Dec. 21 in Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles. It will hit theaters nationwide on Jan. 13, 2017.
