Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan exhibits his prowess scoring ability in the opening games this season. He leads the scoring for his team with average 36 points per game. His prominent play may earn him as a candidate for MVP.
The Raptors has a 4-1 record in the first two weeks of the regular season and DeRozan scored 40 points twice. After posting his first 40 points in the season opener 109-91 victory against Detroit Pistons, he scored another 40 points against Washington Wizards on Wednesday, Nov. 2, as reported by Toronto Star.
Two days later at the Air Canada Center, Toronto, the 27-year old shooting guard posted 34 points in a 96-87 win against the Miami Heat. His teammate, point guard Kyle Lowry admired his tenacity in the game.
“He is playing at another level right now,” Lowry said after the game against the Wizards. He’s saving possessions, he’s creating possessions, he’s creating offence and tonight he hit a three.”
However, as the regular season still have more than 70 games away, it is still to early to predict the future, according to SB Nation. DeRozan’s relentless drive to the rim and jumpshot that keep splashing in may earn him an MVP status. He is now leading the Raptors in points with 35.8 average after five games in 37.1 minutes.
The 2016-17 season is the eighth year for the 6’7” guard with the Raptors since he was selected as ninth pick in the 2009 NBA draft. During his rookie year in Toronto, he averaged only 8.6 points per game. However as he gradually intensifies his shooting skills and his drive to the rim, his scoring continuously improved.
Last season, DeRozan averaged 23.5 points per game. He also posted an average 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He started the 2016-17 season with a remarkable play, and it will be delightful to see him continue does what he is doing.
