The release of Warner Brothers' "Suicide Squad" proved to be one of 2016's most divisive films, earning big in the box-office but was relatively panned by fans and critics. The DC Comics adaptation has been subject to much debate online, with moviegoers reaction ranging from enjoyment of the film to total disappointment.
But these negative reviews did not stop the film from grossing big, which has ended its US domestic run with $325.10 million, Screen Rant reported. This makes "Suicide Squad" as the eighth highest grossing film of 2016 with only $5 million deficit compare to its more expensive sister film "Batman V Superman". The two films share universe continuity, as proved by Ben Affleck's cameo as well as the appearance of "The Flash" played by Ezra Miller, which will be part of the upcoming "Justice League" film.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed $420.5 million outside of the US, accounting for approximately 56% of its entire gross earnings. This brought the film's overall haul to $745.6 million, finishing as the second highest grossing DC Comics film. Not bad for a critically panned film hounded by several problems during its shoot.
It has been reported by Screen Rant that "Suicide Squad" had several major reshoots during production. It was also rumored that the film started shooting scenes without a completed script. Apparently, the reshoots were done in an effort to tone down the film's overall dark feel and to incorporate more humor into the mix.
However, the film ultimate came out of the stable with poor reviews. The film only had 26% rating in Rotten Tomatoes and a normalized score of 40 out of 100 on Metacritic. But Margot Robbie's performance of Harley Quinn was well-received and was considered a star-making performance, with many critics expressing eagerness to seeing more of her character in future films.
