Actor Will Ferrell is said to appear in a movie about competitive video gaming produced by movie company Legendary during an announcement today.
According to Gamespot, the actor best known for his role as Ron Burgundy in "The Anchorman" will star in the yet unnamed film all about esports as a professional gamer. While details are scarce on who the character is or how the movie will pan out, one thing's for sure that Ferrell's role is said to be similar to his Ricky Bobby character in the NASCAR-themed movie "Talladega Nights."
While the story hasn't been detailed out yet, the script will be written by "Funny or Die's" Michael Kvamme and "Wait List Comedy" founder Jordan Dunn. In addition to that, Legendary included in their announcements that top esports teams Evil Geniuses and Fnatic are rumored to appear in the film as well.
Ferrell also had some on-screen gaming experience back in 2014 when he collaborated with a gaming charity to help raise money for cancer research.
So far, there hasn't been any supporting cast, director, title, or even a release date announced for the upcoming esports film yet.
Legendary also did other videogame-based films like this year's "Warcraft" and "Dead Rising: End Game."
The company is also producing the film adaptation of Nintendo's "Detective Pikachu," according to recent reports by The Hollywood Reporter. The live-action film will apparently have the famous Pokemon Pikachu as the main character and will ties to the video game. This Pikachu, however, won't be saying its name has its dialogue but, instead, will be capable of speaking.
The film is said to the first in a "planned franchise." Legendary was to purchase rights back in July to produce a "Pokemon" movie. The movie has already been set in motion to being production by 2017.
