Many fans were wondering why "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker 2" was never made. Nintendo has finally revealed the reason, which gave birth to "Twilight Princess" instead.

There were actual "sort of" sequels to the "Wind Waker" game, however, in the form of "Phantom Hourglass" and "Spirit Tracks." The games, however, were only released on the Nintendo DS. The actual sequel to "Wind Waker" was actually supposed to go to a different route.

Satoru Takizawa, the artist for Nintendo, discussed more about the series' development in the published interview literature called "The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts." Thanks to Nintendo Everything, here's what the artist said:

"If you have played Wind Waker before, you will know that the game takes place with lots of tropical islands surrounded by the sea. It was a different take in the series as you had to sail many meters in order to get to your next destination."

Takizawa mentioned that "Wind Waker 2" would've been set on land this time as opposed to the tropic, island-hopping setting. The protagonist Link would have also been given a chance to have a horse - most probably Epona - but, Takizawa would've found the "Wind Waker" version of the hero's child-like proportions difficult to work with.

He was also asked if an adult version for the "Wind Waker's" Link would have been a better solution. But, due to the backlash of the art style of "Wind Waker," there has been a huge demand for a realistic-looking Link instead.

One thing that also pushed for their decision to develop "Twilight Princess" instead was due to the fact that fantasy-based Hollywood movies like Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" was so popular. So, Nintendo decided to take that direction instead making a "Wind Waker 2."

Speaking of a realistic looking "Zelda" game, the upcoming "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" has already begun taking on the survival aspect to a whole new level for the franchise, taking cues from games like "Skyrim" and such. This next installment of "Zelda" features realistic weather cycles also among many things.

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will be released exclusively for the Nintendo consoles such as Wii U and the upcoming Switch sometime on 2017.
