"Star Wars" is arguably Disney's largest franchise to date after buying out Lucasfilm back in 2012. Nowadays, the studio is busy for the premiere of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" follows the box-office hit "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Since then, the franchise has released new novels, a handful of comic book titles and an animated television series.
The franchise will make standalone anthology films that will feature the unexplored areas of the saga, Cinema Blend reported. "Rogue One" is the first of these films. Before it premieres, here are several things you need to know about the movie:
1. "Rogue One" is both a prequel and a sequel. The story is set before "Star Wars: A New Hope" at a time where the Rebels barely know who Darth Vader is, Entertainment Weekly reported. However, it was also confirmed that the story takes place 19 years after "Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith."
2. The film will feature heists "Ocean's Eleven" style. The premise of the film involves stealing plans for the first Death Star. At the Star Wars Celebration in 2014, it was confirmed that the plot will follow a band of Rebel fighters to will pull off a heist that sits between "A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith."
3. Mon Mothma and Bail Organa are back. Speaking of "Revenge of the Sith," Mothma and Organa are back in "Star Wars" films again. Mothma will be reprised by Genevieve O'Reilly who played the same role in the original film which was relegated to collectors' editions of the film. This time, she will have a bigger role as the leader of the Rebellion.
Organa will also be played by "Revenge of the Sith" actor Jimmy Smits. Organa's character reinforces the theory that "Rogue One" reportedly ends in the transmission of Death Star plans to Princess Leia's ship, the Tantive IV.
"Rogue One: A Star War's Story" opens on Dec. 16. Watch the official trailer below:
