The movie trend of filming a sequel out of a popular film continues in 2016. But a fun, entertaining and even critically acclaimed first film doesn't necessarily mean success in its continued run as the year is riddled yet again with bad sequels.
Zoolander 2: A Film that Came in Too Late
When Zoolander opened in theaters in 2001, it was immediately seen as a genuine comedy with a hilarious take on the fashion industry. A sequel could have been easily made because of the fun characters such as Derek, Hansel and the fun villain, Mugatu.
But the movie came in too late in 2016 and The Guardian reviews it with only two stars with only 23% rating in Rotten Tomatoes. It is still full of cameos but it didn't save the film from bad critic reviews.
Bad Santa 2: A Parade of Insults and Cruelty
Just like Zoolander, Bad Santa opened more than a decade ago (2003) and was received in a relatively good light. But the sequel did not live up to the hype and expectations of the fans of the original movie.
According to Variety, timing could be a factor in the movie's bad review because of the political climate in USA. But it is also quick to note that even without the setting, it is just another parade of insults hurled at each other with more degradation along the way.
X-Men: Apocalypse: This is not 'Days of the Future Past'
"Days of the Future Past" may have reset the X-Men cinematic universe with a brilliant film but the follow-up was a thud. Although it scored relatively high compared to other movies mentioned (48% in Rotten Tomatoes) a movie featuring some of the greatest superheroes, villains and turning point in its storyline could have been told in a better light.
