Infinite recently completed its 2017 Seasons Greetings pictorial. The activity also had a segment where the members of the boy group were interviewed. During the talk with Kim Sunggyu, he revealed that he will be passing his leader position to Nam Woohyun.
With what Sunngyu had said, it means that he will no longer be Infinite's leader starting in 2017. According to SBS, this change in the group's leadership may have something to do with military enlistment.
"Starting from next year, I'll pass my responsibility as the leader to Woohyun," Koreaboo quoted Sunggyu as saying in the video interview.
Fans are guessing that Sunggyu is passing on his duties as Infinite's leader to Woohyun because he is set to enter the army in 2017. He is only 27 years old and it appears that he would like to complete his army duty as early as he can so he can get back fast for his fans.
Then again, although fans are sure that this is the reason for appointing Woohyun as the leader starting next year, nothing has been confirmed yet with regards to Sunggyu's enlistment. There's not even a single report about him joining the army, so it is possible that there are other reasons as well.
If Sunggyu is really enlisting in 2017, he will be joining JYJ's Xia Junsu and Big Bang's TOP in the list of celebrities that were scheduled to start their mandatory military service in the first quarter of next year.
Military enlistment is a requirement for all males in South Korea and it is one thing that male K-Pop idol groups need to deal with at some point in their careers. Avoiding the service will get them into serious trouble and this is why everyone is abiding by this strict army law.
