"X-Men" star Michael Fassbender has said that he is uncertain about his future as Magneto within the franchise.
In an interview, the actor was asked whether he would reprise the character in future "X-Men" films. The actor played it safe. He did not answer the question directly but said that for now, he has no idea with what will happen to the future of the franchise so he has not really made any decision regarding the matter.
"I don't know to be honest. I haven't made any sort of decision on it because I have no idea what's happening next with the franchise to be honest," he told The Empire Film Podcast.
In earlier interviews, Fassbender seemed to be open to any possibility of returning to the character. "Always interested in moving forward," he said.
In separate reports, Fox allegedly wants the trio of Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto) and James McAvoy (Professor X) to return in future "X-Men" films. In fact, series writer and producer Simon Kinberg is reportedly working on a script in a soft reboot for the franchise that may have all three of them return, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
While the three actors have yet to renew or extend their original three-movie contracts, longtime "X-Men" director Bryan Singer will reportedly not be involved in case there will be a new installment.
So far, Fassbender has made three appearances as the metal manipulating mutant Magneto in "X-Men: First Class," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and "X-Men: Apocalypse." Fox may have had plans for a fourth "X-Men" movie with the new generation of actors playing the iconic mutant characters in place.
However, the lackluster reception of "Apocalypse" may have had affected that decision. Nonetheless, it won't be surprising either if Fox will continue the "X-Men" ensemble films given its already established narrative.
