Fans of "Game of Thrones" are in for a post-holiday treat before 2016 wraps up. HBO is offering a complete six season marathon of the hit fantasy series, all set to be rolled out (via HBO 2) after Christmas day.
The premium cable network will kick off the marathon beginning at noon of Dec. 26th, unspooling the 10-episode first season of "Game of Thrones" back-to-back. Subsequent seasons will air the next day at the same time, concluding with the sixth season on New Year's Eve.
"Game of Thrones" has been a top performing series for HBO since its launched in 2011. The binge watching opportunity makes for a great move from the cable network to whet the fans' appetite for the show's penultimate season, which will premiere in the summer of 2017.
To recap, "Game of Thrones" season 6 left fans with a satisfying ending, while also setting up a couple of high-stakes storyline for its major players. One of the most anticipated arcs that is rumored to unfold in Season 7 is the battle between Cersei and Daenerys.
Production for "Game of Thrones" Season 7 has kicked off months ago, filming on location in some regions of Spain and Croatia. Just recently, it was reported that Icelandic actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson will reprise his role as The Mountain in the new season after being spotted on set with co-stars Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster Waldau.
As for new faces, professional mixed martial artist Conor McGregor has been confirmed to play a role on "Game of Thrones" Season 7. Details on his character are still under wraps, but rumors have surfaced saying that he's only booked for a small role playing a pirate.
As "Game of Thrones" nears its end game, the series continues to receive recognition as one of TV's best dramas. It was recently nominated at the 74th Golden Globe for Best Drama TV Series competing against "Westworld," Netflix's "The Crown" and "Stranger Things" and NBC's "This Is Us."
