"Justice League" actor Jeremy Irons and "The Drop" actor Matthias Schoenaerts are on board to join "X-Men Apocalypse" actress Jennifer Lawrence and "The Gift" actor Joel Edgerton in the spy thriller "Red Sparrow." "Hunger Games" director Francis Lawrence is re-teaming with Jennifer for his latest directorial effort.
Jennifer will play as the Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova and Edgerton to play as first-tour CIA officer Nathaniel Nash in "Red Sparrow." Irons' and Schoenaerts' roles are still being kept under wraps.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Red Sparrow" is based on Jason Matthew's espionage novel of the same name. It is set in modern-day Russia in the intelligence bureaucracy with Egovora drafted against her will to become a trained seductress assigned to operate against Nash, handling the agency's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers fall into a spiral of attraction and deception resulting in Egovora's leading life as a double agent.
"The Lone Ranger" writer Justin Haythe re-wrote the original script of "Red Sparrow" by "American Hustle" writer Eric Warren Singer, Variety reported. Chernin Entertainment and Film Rites are producing.
Irons will next star in video game adaptation "Assassin's Creed" and Disney's "Their Finest." He is expected to reprise his role as Alfred in Warner Bros.' "Justice League." He is represented by CAA.
Schoenaerts' recent credits include Tom Hooper's romance drama "The Danish Girl" and Luca Guadagnino's thriller "A Bigger Splash." He will soon star in Netflix's upcoming movie "Our Souls at Night" with "Ocean Warriors" actor Robert Redford and "The Simpsons" actress Jane Fonda. He is represented by CAA and UBBA in Paris.
Jennifer has starred in "The Hunger Games" and "X-Men: Apocalypse" and will be seen next in the untitled Darren Aronofsky Project. Meanwhile, Edgerton starred in "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and is currently filming David Ayer's sci-fi "Bright."
"Red Sparrow" is set to be released on Nov. 10.
