20th Century Fox has actually begun a trend for itself ever since its release of "The Martian VR Experience" released last year. Now, it's planning to release two more projects coming from its own internal studio, Fox Innovation Lab: "Alien: Covenant" and "Planet of the Apes."
Our earlier reports mentioned director Ridley Scott teaming up with Fox to create the "Alien: Covenant VR Experience" based on the upcoming entry in the "Alien" film franchise. Scott will take on the role of executive producer, while filmmaker David Karlak will be directing the experience.
Attack of the Fanboy further covers this as it reports that the studio executives have plans making the "Alien: Covenant VR Experience" a strong narrative piece. They claim that it's more than a promotional move for them - they see VR as a "business opportunity and a way to expand storytelling."
The "Alien" VR experience is described to "a dread-inducing journey into the depths of the Alien universe," reflective of the way the "Alien: Covenant" film is directed, with the oppressive, spine-chilling atmosphere the classic original film had.
"Viewers will discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments and a story where every decision could mean the difference between life and death," according to Fox's description of the VR experience.
With the ambitious move Fox is making with the revolutionary platform, they also have another VR experience game they're planning to release soon. This time it has nothing to do with space and the element of fear, but, rather, a sense of adventure and primal conflict based on the "Planet of the Apes" franchise.
Assistants to the CES in Las Vegas were able to get a sneak peek of the VR game as they witness a scene of a player taking control of one of the apes in combat with another ape. While the demo was run using the Oculus Rift, Fox Innovation Lab executives assured have final plans of releasing the game in all major high-end VR platforms.
Our guess is that the game will be released on July along with or somewhere close to the release of the upcoming "War of the Planet of the Apes" film. The VR experience, however, won't be directly based on the film.
While we await Fox's two new titles to come out - or at least a preview of them - we can expect the same experience we've had from their previous VR game based on "The Martian," out now for the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.
