After starring in the 2015 film "Detective Hong Gil-Dong," Lee Je-Hoon, 31, plays the main character Park Hae Young in the South Korean drama series "Signal," which premiered on tvN on Jan. 22. Joining him in the main cast are Kim Hye-Soo and Cho Jin-Woong as Cha Soo Hyun and Lee Jae Han, espectively.
"Signal" serves as the fourth South Korean drama series Je-Hoon starred in. He made his debut on the small screen in 2010 when he played Kim Eun-gook in "Three Sisters" before he played Jung Jae-hyuk in "Fashion King" in 2012 and Yi Sun/Crown Prince Sado in "Secret Door" in 2014.
Based on the first serial murder in South Korea's history, "Signal" is inspired by the Hwaseong serial murders, in which an unknown culprit raped and killed 10 women aged 13 to 71 from 1986 to 1991 in Hwaseong in Gyeonggi, South Korea. In the same city, international visitors are expected to visit Hwaseong Fortress in celebration of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site's 220th anniversary, Koogle TV reported.
In 2003, the film "The Memories of Murder" directed by Bong Joon Ho was also inspired by the Hwaseong serial murders. Song Kang-ho, Kim Sang-kyung and Kim Roi-ha played detectives in the film.
Directed by Kim Won Suk and written by Kim Eun Hee, "Signal" tells the story of how the lives of detectives from different eras intertwine. To solve an unsolved case, a detective from the past communicates with detectives from the present via walkie-talkie. The detectives are played by Je-Hoon, Hye-Soo and Cho.
Before it premiered on Jan. 22, a special episode of "Signal" aired on tvN. Its fourth episode aired on Jan. 30 to be followed by episode 5 on Feb. 2, Korea Times has learned.
Also in the supporting cast of "Signal" are Lee Yoo Joon as Jung Hun Gi Jung Han Bi as Oh Yoon Seo, Jung Hae Kyun as Kim Bum Joo, Kim Won Hae as Kim Gye Chul, Kim Min Kyu as Hwang Ui Kyung, Jang Hyun Sung as Ahn Chi Soo and Hwang Tae Kwang as Kim Jung Je.
