Reese Witherspoon is speaking up about her hopes for another "Legally Blonde" sequel.
The actress, who played the girlish lawyer Elle Woods, recently spoke with E! Online to address the future of Legally Blonde. According to the actress, she's just waiting for someone to come up with a clever pitch for a "Legally Blonde" part 3. If that happens, she'll be totally on board with the project.
"I do think it's a good time to do it," she said. "I think women need that kind of positivity right now."
"It's a great privilege to be a woman in America," she said. "We have many rights and freedoms that a lot of women don't have all over the world. I try to celebrate that. I try to live that to its utmost, particularly the freedom of speech, being able to express myself, create shows like this to show how important women are in our world. That's what I try to focus on."
After working on the "Legally Blonde" franchise, Witherspoon got busy on other film and TV projects. Her recent credits include Sing, Wild, This Means War, and Four Christmases. She currently stars on HBO's upcoming dramedy series, Big Little Lies opposite Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley.
"I think diving deeply into issues that affect women so profoundly, it's not just a sort of desired mission statement," Witherspoon said about her new show on the premium cable network.
"It's sort of a mandate in my life. Women are much more complex than what we're seeing on screen and I feel it's important to see how women behave with each other. And I think that's a unique thing about this show. It's how women really speak to each other about issues that really affect them."
The first "Legally Blonde" movie was released in 2011 and has since become a pop culture phenomenon. It followed the story of Witherspoon's character, a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend by getting a law degree at Harvard University. It was a huge success, grossing a total of $141.8 million in the box office.
The film spawned a sequel, "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde," in 2003 and a musical starring Laura Bell Bundy in 2007.
