The upcoming SBS drama series titled "Moon Lovers" stars Lee Joon-gi and Kang Ha-neul as princes. They will star with Lee Ji-eun, who is professionally IU, who will play the female lead role.
Lee will play the fourth prince named Wang So while Ha-neul's character is the eighth prince named Wang Wook. IU's character is a girl named Hae-soo who suddenly travels back in time from modern day Seoul and finds herself in Goryeo dynasty.
Lee, Kang and IU will be joined by two K-pop stars. Byun Baek-hyun, one of the main vocalist of EXO, will play the 10th prince named Wang Hyun while Seohyun of Girls' Generation will play the 13th princess named Woo-hee.
Seohyun's character will eventually become a professional entertainer in ancient Korea called gisaeng. The Girls' Generation member has finalized her role in the upcoming SBS drama series, Korea Joongang Daily has learned.
"Moon Lovers" is not the first South Korean drama series to feature Seohyun. She previously appeared in "Kimcheed Radish Cubes," "Unstoppable Marriage," "Passionate Love," "The Producers" and "Warm and Cozy."
On the other hand, Byun played a fictional version of himself in the 2015 South Korean web series "EXO Next Door." On the big screen, the EXO member has yet to play a film role.
Joining Byun and Seohyun in the supporting cast are Ji-soo, Nam Joo-hyuk and Hong Jong-hyun as princes. Kang Han-na will also play a princess named Hwangbo Yeon-hwa.
Directed by Kim Kyu-tae and written by Jo Yoon-young, "Moon Lovers" also stars Z. Hera, Park Ji-young, Jo Min-ki, Sung Dong-il, Kim Sung-kyung and Park Si-eun. The characters they will play are members of the Royal Family.
Meanwhile, YG Entertainment is branching out into the South Korean drama series production business. In collaboration with NBC Universal, the company will invest in "Moon Lovers."
In a statement obtained by Soompi, YG Entertainment said, "With the investment in 'Moon Lovers,' we are laying the groundwork for our content creation, investment, and distribution business, as well as additional ventures."
Set to premiere on SBS in September, "Moon Lovers" is a remake of the Chinese series "Scarlet Heart." Watch a news clip about the upcoming SBS drama series here:
