"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales" duo Jerry Bruckheimer and Joachim Ronning reunite on Paramount Pictures' science-fiction movie "Origin." Bruckheimer is producing with Ronning directing.
According to Variety, Paramount made a pre-emptive purchase of Ronning's pitch for "Origin" and is keeping details of the plot under wraps. Bruckheimer will produce through his Paramount-based Jerry Bruckheimer Films company. Paramount's Elizabeth Raposo and Marc Evans made the deal for the studio.
Ronning will also write the script of "Origin" with his brother Andreas Ronning, Deadline reported. He will direct solo after previously teaming with "Pirates" and "Kon-Tiki" co-director Espen Sandberg, becoming his latest project. Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales" is currently in post-production.
This is not only the first time for Bruckheimer to produce since he has produced all five "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies with Johnny Depp. He is also a producer on the Afghanistan War drama "Horse Soldiers" with Black Label Media Productions in his first foray into independent producing. "Moonlight" star Trevante Rhodes, Michael Shannon, Chris Hemsworth, and Michael Pena are starring.
Bruckheimer began his career at Paramount Pictures with Don Simpson during the 1980s with "Beverly Hills Cop," "Top Gun," and "Flashdance" and then spent nearly two decades at Disney with "Armageddon," "The Rock," "Con Air," "Crimson Tide," and "National Treasure." After a costly flop with Depp's "The Lone Ranger," he returned to the company in late 2013.
Ronning is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Pictures, and lawyer Warren Dern. He is separately attached to direct biblical film "Methusaleh" for Warner Bros, starring David Heyman and potentially Tom Cruise.
Besides "Origin," Ronning will also direct "Winter's Knight," which focuses on the Viking-mythology-tinged origin story of St. Nick and Christmas. Sony bought in a seven-figure deal for the latter film for scribes Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, with Marc Platt and Lawrence Grey producing.
"Origin" is a contemporary big-scale high-concept science fiction premise with franchise potential.
