Melissa McCarthy's stint with "Saturday Night Live" as Sean Spicer did not end last week as she returns for the show's latest cold opening. Fiery as ever, the comedian tapped the latest news on politics to take jabs at the president and the press secretary.
McCarthy's Return as Press Secretary
"Saturday Night Live" opened last weekend with a surprise yet familiar guest - Melissa McCarthy and she returns portraying one of the most talked about personality today: Press Secretary Sean Spicer. According to Washington Post, McCarthy's character discussed some of the most pressing issues today focusing on the Trump administration and his family.
One of the highlights of the cold opening was McCarthy's character discussing Ivanka's issue with Nordstrom and the subsequent call by spokesperson Kellyanne Conway to avoid the luxury shopping store. While it starts with a statement against Nordstrom, McCarthy eventually changed his presentation just like QVC. The comedian even showed her giant heels claiming that these "babies are real head turners."
But it's not just about Ivanka's tiff with Nordstrom that got discussed as McCarthy's Spicer also pointed out several unreported terror attacks such as The Bowling Green Massacre ("not the Kellyanne one"). With regards to his detractors and questions, McCarthy's use of grass blower and a remote controlled podium literally disrupted the floor.
Extreme Vetting with Dolls and Jeff Sessions
Just like last week, McCarthy also turned to visual aids to explain certain concepts. According to New York Times, her character introduced vetting by using an army doll, Barbie and Moana. Because she's blonde, she was automatically allowed while Moana was questioned and eventually kicked out.
The cold opening also features Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions. With a heavy southern accent, he proclaimed "we all know there are two kind of crime: regular and black" and he was immediately pushed out of the podium by Spicer with no additional questions.
McCarthy's cold opening will surely solicit some reaction from the POTUS himself and it'll never be pretty. But with the show enjoying it's all time high in ratings, McCarthy might be back for more.
