Cleveland Cavaliers has ended its long search for point guard after securing Deron Williams from Dallas Mavericks. The veteran point guard is expected to sign a contract with Cavaliers on Monday, Feb. 27.
According to Cleveland.com, Williams will sign with the Cavaliers to take the vacant spot after Matthew Dellavedova left Cleveland in the last year’s off-season. Prior to joining the Cavaliers, Williams had secured a buyout from Dallas Mavericks on Thursday and cleared waivers two days later.
The 32-year-old point guard had two teams that lined up for him, his old team Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers. However, he decided to commit to the Cavaliers until the end of this season after he cleared his waivers on Saturday.
With the new veteran point guard who can make an outside shooting, Cleveland Cavaliers will become dominant force in the Eastern Conference. Williams will give the team a sufficient depth in the back court, USA Today reported. Cavaliers will also get the good deal, as Williams only cost a little over $900,000 in salary and luxury tax payments.
Williams may be the answer to the point guard which the Cavaliers has desperately needed for the last two months. The team has a strong point guard with Kyrie Irving, but he doesn’t have a suitable backup. DeAndre Liggins and Kay Felder are two good point guards, but they have problem to maintain consistency.
The 6’3” player is a veteran point guard that has been in the league since 2005. He was drafted by Utah Jazz as the third overall selection. He played for six seasons with the Jazz as the starting point guard.
