"The Elder Scrolls" online was revealed to have reached a new milestone after recording more than 8.5 million number of players. This significant feat was shared by none other than ZeniMax Online Studio's president Matt Firor.
The information was personally shared by Firor to MMORPG during "The Elder Scrolls" Online press event and various gaming news outlets picked up the story. It can be noted that this number is 1.5 million bigger than last year's seven million players that was announced during the June 2016 E3.
This simply means than in less than one year, the total of players has grown by more than a million. The figure given was based from the number of actual units sold and not the count of online registrants who created their ESO accounts.
The ZeniMax Online Studio president added that the players are evenly split among all the gaming platforms. At the moment, "The Elder Scrolls" Online is available on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.
At any rate, even if not all of the 8.5 million gamers are currently active, at least the game gets around 1 million play per month. This fact alone made ESO the most popular MMORPG on console today. "Final Fantasy XIV" only place second in this regard.
According to Game Rant, when "The Elder Scrolls" was launched in 2014, it garnered negative feedback and low number of players. However, since the game continuously received updates and expansions, it eventually improved and players started to get hooked up in the play. It can be said that at this point, ZeniMax was able to turned things around.
Meanwhile, players of "The Elder Scrolls" Online are highly anticipating game's first expansion called Morrowind. It was said that this is arriving sometime in summer and the update can potentially increase the sales even more. Finally, with the DLC, players will be able to explore the universe in ESO that they have not explored yet until now.
