Tickets for the special screening of the two-decade-old sci-fi film Independence Day have sold out in China.
Tickets for the five special screenings of Independence Day at the Shanghai International Film Festival between June 16 and 18 reportedly sold out, China.org reported.
The director of the movie Roland Emmerich to Beijing to promote its sequel, Sirena Liu, 20th Century Fox China's managing director, said.
When the original movie was released in 1996, it set a record as highest grossing film raking in nearly $818 million globally and the second highest-grossing film of all time at that point. It also won the Best Visual Effects award in the Academy Awards.
Even though the movie did not reach the big screen in China that year, fans watched the film on VHS, DVD, and VCD, according to Yibada.
"It is a rare opportunity for die-hard fans to see the film for the first time on the big screen, which compensates those who had no choice to see the classic 20 years ago," she said.
The movie's sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, which will be directed by Roland Emmerich, will simultaneously be released in China with other film markets on June 24. The film will star Chinese actress Angelababy, who will start promoting the movie in Beijing on June 22.
The 19th annual Shanghai International Film Festival, which runs between June 11 and 19, 2016, has other special screenings on the list including Classic 007 Film Screening, Jackie Chan Action Movie Week, and New Works from Known Japanese Filmmakers, to name a few.
