In just three weeks after its official cinema release, "The Legend of Tarzan" already garnered $103 million, with an additional $90 million in the global box office. It has surpassed the expectations of many viewers, contrary to the disapproving reviews the film has received from its critics. It was even more surprising for the production team when the film exceeded "Rise of the Planet of The Apes" in the Russian box office.
"The Legend of Tarzan" has had mixed reviews from the moment it opened in the global market, as critics have described the film with adjectives vacillating from tame, lifeless, and even uninspiring. However, the film has proven its critics wrong when it made an unpredicted $19.3 million sales in 12 international markets. The film grossed $3.1 million in Russia and made it into the country's top five all-time best.
The film has had several adaptations since its first debut sometime in 1912. According to The Guardian, Alexander Skarsgard's version of Edgar Rice Burroughs's character in "The Legend of Tarzan" is perhaps the closest that he could have imagined; however, despite the commendation, many still did not approve of Skarsgard's performance.
There was a lot of pressure for Skarsgard to live up to his character as the king of the Jungle in "The Legend of Tarzan." According to Xpose, the actor prepared for his role by watching several documentaries on animals by David Attenborough. He also worked with his choreographer, Wayne McGregor, in order to mimic various animal movements.
Meanwhile, the director of "The Legend of Tarzan," David Yates, believed that Skarsgard was fitting for the role since he had both the body and the talent to make a good Tarzan.
