Japanese tech giant Sony Electronics recently announced its newest line of 4K LCD television sets called the Z Series. The new Z Series will dethrone the X Series in terms of display quality. Sony also added the latest high-dynamic range (HDR) and 4K image processor into the Z Series.
In a statement acquired by The Verge, Sony Electronics president and chief operating officer Mike Fasulo said, "The Z series is a generational advance in TV technology, which brings the 4K HDR viewing experience to a whole new level."
Sony will release three models under the Z Series banner. At the bottom of the group is the 65-inch XBR65Z9D which costs $6,999. Next is the mid-tiered 75-inch XBR75Z9D which costs $9,999. Finally, the premium model 100-inch XBR100Z9D whose price was not revealed.
Sony said that as of July 20, the 65-inch and 75-inch models are already available for pre-order with target delivery dates starting later this summer. The company added that the pricing and availability of the 100-inch model will be supplied later this year.
Despite their interesting specs, the Z Series has one missing feature, and that is the Dolby Vision support. Regarding this feature, Sony executives reveal that they dropped support for Dolby Vision in order to push support for HDR10, a format that Sony has been promoting along with Samsung.
For consumers who are concerned about whether the Z Series supports the latest contents provided by streaming services, Sony said that there is nothing to worry about since content providers like Amazon and Netflix are making sure that their contents are available in both formats.
According to CNet, the Sony Z Series runs on the Android TV operating system with the Netflix and Amazon apps already pre-installed in the system. The Z Series also comes pre-installed with the Sony Ultra app which offers Sony Pictures films in 4K and HDR formats.
