Following the news that "Divergent Series: Ascendant" will not be hitting the big screen, Theo James and Shailene Woodley has been rumored to have lost their on screen chemistry. The bland responses that the audience gave during the last installment, "Divergent Series: Allegiant," caused the film's ratings to spiral downwards. This led to Lionsgate's decision to cut the theatrical release of the franchise's final installment.
James and Woodley has been one of the hottest on-screen lovebirds. Their steamy scenes in the previous "Divergent" installments has drawn a lot of attention from their fans. But lately, their chemistry does not appear as evident. Movie critics believe this to be the reason why "Divergent Series: Allegiant" failed to hit the blockbuster, unlike the previous two installments. Thus, Lionsgate's new game plan is to cut the budget for the final installment and turn "Divergent Series: Ascendant" into a TV series.
However, James and Woodley were left in the dark and had no idea what was happening to the franchise. Woodley expressed how shocked she was about the news during an interview at the San Diego Comic-Con. Variety reported that negotiations about turning "Divergent Series: Ascendant" into a TV series is still in its early stages.
Meanwhile, Hypable reported that as of date, James, Woodley and even Ansel Elgort have yet to sign up with Lionsgate's decision to cut the cinema release of "Divergent Series: Ascendant." The publication further reported that turning the supposed film into a TV series would require renegotiations in order to keep the original casts committed to the franchise. James, Woodley and Elgort also have other individual projects that they are currently busy with so the company would need to provide a reasonable offer for their plans to push through.
