The CW has officially cancelled "The Vampire Diaries." The hit vampire drama starring Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley will conclude after its upcoming eight season.
After months of speculations, "The Vampire Diaries" creator and executive producer Julie Plec has confirmed during Comic Con that Season 8 will mark as the show's final season, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"This is going to be the final season," Plec said.
"It's bittersweet and emotional and we're going to be crying about this in a few minutes."
The showrunner also said her goodbyes to the fans of "The Vampire Diaries" who have stuck with the show for years, calling the past seven season "a beautiful run." As to whether or not loyal supporters of the series will get another glimpse of Elena (Nina Dobrev) in the final stretch, Plec assured them that Dobrev is always welcome on their show.
"Nina has always said that if there's something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it," Plec explained.
"The Vampire Diaries" was a huge hit for the CW and has established a strong following of fans since its debut. The central characters, Damon, Elena and Stefan and their stories have since then developed a deep relationship and connection with the fans - making the trio become television's most talked about in different platforms of social media.
Moving forward, "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 has added a new face to join its final run. Recently, the show has recruited "UnReal" actress Nathalie Kelley to play the recurring character of Sybil aka "evil herself" in the new bunch of episodes, TV Line reported.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 premieres on Friday, Oct. 21 at 8PM on the CW.
